Bronco has invented a new theme for November: “Survive and Advance.” Despite the “weak” schedule, Bronco maintains that if they simply win, enough teams will fall and provide them an opportunity to play in the first ever College Football Playoff. To strength of schedule opponents Bronco points out that they have played 3 ranked teams and beat them all, which is as good as anyone else in the top-10. MTSU is a solid team, a game the Cougars should win, but they are tough at home (3-1, only loss to up-and-coming WKU) and, in a weird scheduling advantage, MTSU has a bye week before BYU and after. They will be well-rested and prepared with no previous or future game to distract them.

While MTSU had to replace their QB from 2013 (Kilgore) they get their star RB Whatley back and believe they can run on the Cougars. What they don’t remember is that last year’s affair would have been a blowout but for 6 untimely fumbles by BYU, 2 of which inside the MTSU 5 when BYU was ready to score. MTSU shows flashes of speed and talent but is overwhelmed by BYU’s depth and overall skill. BYU promises to hang onto the ball better and they do just that.
Hill opens the game by taking BYU 11 plays, 75 yards to score on a JSwag run from 4 yards out. Later in the quarter he nails Mathews over the middle for a 16 yard TD on a broken, come-back route into the end zone. MTSU makes things interesting early when Whatley breaks free from BYU’s secondary and scampers for a 48 yard TD run, but BYU’s D clamps down and limits their running game from there on out. Hill throws one more TD pass (24 yards to Davis) and runs for another (3 yard option). Algie Brown and JSwag also add running TD’s of their own (12 and 31 yards respectively) and BYU makes their second FG of the year (28 yards) and BYU rolls in Tennessee, 38-10.
