That's an interesting phenomenon
I wonder if it has to do with this book introducing people to Japanese war atrocities for the first time? When I read the book I was already familiar with the historical context, so it didn't change my perception of the Japanese army in that era or Japanese people today. Maybe if it had radically altered my idea of who Japanese people are, it would cause me to feel prejudice toward them -- mostly as an emotional reaction to that new information.
