One thing that could be the problem that hasn't been mentioned is...
other than BYU hasn't been really all that spectacular to watch the last 4 to 5 years... is Independence. It's just not fun... when you lose your first game, and typically that first loss has shown up at some point in the first 3 weeks... the season is over at that point. You are playing for a crappy bowl game that quite frankly nobody is interested. There is no playing for a conference championship, something that can still be achievable, even if you lost your first 3 games of the season. 1 loss, and BYU is playing for Poinsettia bowl or San Fran Bowl or the Miami Beach bowl... bowl games that at the end of the day... aren't something to brag about at all.
