Meyer increased the Ute fanbase for sure
but it seems like it was through taking Utah residents who were indifferent to both BYU and Utah, and making them Utah fans. The whole "what have you done for me lately" bit. For those in Utah that were not born or too young to remember BYU of the 80's, Urban Meyer built a Utah team that, for them, was the first team in the state to do anything on a national scale.

I left the Rocky Mtns (born in ID, BYU class of '02) after I graduated from the Y, so don't know what is going on now, but from my casual observance through the internet, it seems Utah has gained fans more through the above and not as much as from BYU fans who left for the darkside.
