It's so different from when I was growing up. I was born in '82 and when I was a kid growing up in the 80s and 90s, just about everyone was a BYU fan. You almost took it for granted. BYU was the hip school to root for back in those days.
BYU had won a national championship, we beat Miami, we had a Heisman trophy quarterback, and a legendary football coach in Lavell Edwards. We almost always had good offenses, and we had far superior talent to Utah.
No one cared about Utah. They were a small commuter school up north with just a handful of fans in downtown Salt Lake and on the East bench. BYU was Utah's NFL team. Utah was little brother and had a reputation as a loser program.
It's sad to see how the tables have turned and how the Ute fanbase has multiplied in the last decade. Also, you used to never see Ute fans in Utah County. Now they're all over the place. BYU still has a lot of fans but they don't dominate the state like they used to in the 80s and 90s during my childhood. It's pretty depressing actually.
