What are you talking about? The modern scholarship limits weren't put in place
until 1992. Despite the gap between BYU and the major P5 schools today, it was far larger in 1972, when we had little talent, a crumbling matchbox of a stadium, and no history or brand to speak of.

Lavell built a program, and gained national respect.

BYU was 11-0 and ranked #9 going into the 1979 postseason. Had the field goal gone in against Indiana, they would have finished probably no higher than #6 or 7. The respect was growing, but it wasn't there. 1984 was as much about the 5 ranked finishes from 1977-1983, and the 3 Heisman finalists (Wilson, McMahon, and Young) as it was going undefeated in 1984.
