...and high school football across the nation is significantly a bigger deal than it was during Lavell's era so there is a much higher volume of high caliber players to recruit. So even though more schools compete now, the pool is larger and it's likely relative to what Lavell faced in his day. Summer camps, etc are cranking up the talent and development of high school players. You almost never saw a freshman play during Lavell's day, they needed to gain weight and strength for a couple seasons before they were ready to hit the field. Now we have kids walking in and starting and making a major impact. I think the talent pool of ready talent is much larger now.
As for BYU's facilities, they're not that old. A lot was upgraded at the end of Lavell beginning of Crowton's tenure iirc. We got a new indoor practice facility, player dorms and training table, better lockerrooms, better workout/weight rooms, etc. You're way off with 2 of your 4 points I think.
