Not that fans think BYU should win because of righteousness...
(Although a very few fans do attribute wins to that from time to time- see "living right on and off the field") but the assumption of moral superiority, righteousness and smugness in general are antagonistic/obnoxious to other fanbases.
One small example of irritating hypocrisy would be fans jumping all over other teams' players when they transgress (see mug shot sig line pics, gloating/chiding posts, etc.) but taking offense to and calling out other fanbases for tastelessness when they return the favor. (see any Max Hall or Brandon Davies related jokes/pics/gags).
