You lost me at...
"here's my vision for BYU's football program...they become an oregon-lite with the financial backing of the LDS church"...
The church will never, EVER, start funding the football program with general church (tithing) funds. I would be incredibly upset if they did (just as I get incredibly angry when Utah's sports programs are subsidized by my tax dollars).
Nor should the church allow themselves to get into an arms race with the P5 (re: paying athletes). As major college football becomes less and less about student athletes competing for the love of the game while they earn their degrees, and more like a professional minor league for the NFL, the less I think BYU should be involved.
There are a lot of schools in the west (many in the WCC) with competitive basketball, volleyball, and other sports programs without football. At this point, it's P5 or bust for BYU football. If BYU football can't land in a P5 conference, it's looking at total extinction.
