I'm sure this was extensively covered in Utah and/or church media publications. Unless BYU football is involved, I mostly read neither. So what's the rationale--if we can empty the coffers on urban renewal, why is an investment in the flagship athletic program's flagship sport off the table?
For the record, my feeling is that the Church has been a model steward of its members' offerings. I can think of reasons for urban renewal but they may not represent the party line. I'm sure there are things of which I haven't thought.
Anyone care to bring me up to speed and address the question of "why not BYU football?"
