Rating Officials
Officials are rated every time they take the floor. The video of the game is watched and charted. They record every call you make for statistical evaluation. Those stats will tell how many calls you made from the Lead, Center or Trail. How many you made on each team (home and away). The stats tell you how many violations you called and from what position. How many shooting fouls you called.

On the hurt pinky, that is an automatic stoppage. Anytime a player is in danger of further hurting himself play is stopped. In this case had the ball been thrown to him and hit his hand, or a player bump into his hand he could have done some serious damage. In this case BYU had the ball but there was no clear advantage. Had BYU been going the other way on a fast break the whistle would have been withheld until neither team had an advantage. (example: a player falls to the floor as the other team is on a fast break. The trail official will remain with the fallen player and once it is determined no advantage is maintained by a team the whistle will be blown)

Coaches have the ability to make comments to coordinators about how they think officials are working their games. It becomes a smaller factor in the evaluation.

Video is compiled of calls made during the season (mostly incorrect calls - lol) and they are reviewed with the official asking why he made the call.

I know that fans are intense. I have become more critical of officiating during BYU games since I retired from officiating. I watch every game with a close friend and he laughs when I start making calls. Years ago (more than I care to admit) I agreed to officiate a charity game at a local high school. As a joke I told my partner to just keep the game going and I went up and sat in the stands. When the teams came back down the court I stood up and blew the whistle, turned around and announced "you really can see them bette from here". It got a good laugh.

Officials have good and bad games. I thought the officials in the Purdue game had a mediocre game and the reason I think so is they were inconsistent. Players get a sense of how the game is going to be called and they adjust accordingly. But if you are going to let them play and then call ticky fouls and then let them play, etc... it makes it difficult for the players.

All that being said, officials will miss calls. But I can have never known an official who was not trying to do it correctly. They know when they miss a call but there is nothing they can, or should, do about it. There should never be anything even close to a "make up call". That is only compounding the problem.
