the estimated cost in lives of a land invasion of Japan was much worse
And everything Japan had showed the allies up to that point was desperation and visciousness. A lethal combination. Taking those islands from them seemed like child play compared to invading the mainland. Even if Japan was close to surrender, the allies had little way to know what they'd do and they'd never seen Japan surrender from anything. We really, really didn't want to invade their homeland and at that point in the war they still refusd to concede.
