This is a good point, it is definitely bad for you..
What bothers me and I think most other people is the inconsistency and having the wrong priorities. It isn't wrong for BYU to try to keep people healthy, what is wrong is sending the message by supporting a behavior that is EVEN MORE unhealthy. As mentioned above, if BYU cared about fans' health, they wouldn't sell french fries, ice cream, churros, or regular soda, all of which are more detrimental to the health of Americans given the outbreaks of diabetes and obesity. You could argue that those are choices, but the worst example is regular soda, because all things being equal, it is much better for people to have a small amount of caffeine and zero calories (diet coke), than it is for them to have no caffeine and lots of sugar/calories, (sprite, root beer, etc.). So by not offering a popular caffeinated option, you are actually making people less healthy because they consume an additional 300 calories that they otherwise wouldn't have.

If BYU just offered water, diet sprite, low calorie juice, and milk then at least they would be consistent. It is the inconsistency that bothers people, similar to how some members look down on diet coke but they themselves would be much better off if they consumed diet coke given their obesity.

Just my two cents, but your overall point is valid.
