RE: "Lifelong BYU fans" don't defect. Casual fans do.
My Dad took me to my first game when I was 2. It was Ty Detmers last game in the Holiday Bowl. My whole childhood was spent in BYU jerseys, watching every BYU game, and making the trip to Provo every October for my birthday, and every time time BYU played a big game.
If anything my Dad was too invested. Anything but casual. But he just doesn't enjoy watching the games anymore. But Utah's recent success and my Brothers defection have been poisonous. Last season he complimented and even watched a few Utah games. It's gone way too far.
