About 20 years ago, I went to one of those four hour Priesthood Leadership
Meetings. Elder Oaks and Elder Scott did the training. Four hours sounds like a lot, but those meetings were actually very good.

On a side note, there was a BYU game that day - when the two apostles went around shaking hands, they were very cordial and friendly (I say that to demonstrate my joke wasn't as inappropriate as it might appear). When Elder Oaks came by, I told him I was surprised that as a former BYU president, he scheduled the meeting on game day (football). He quipped back jokingly to me, "that is why the Lord gave us VCR's"...

Anyway, one of the questions during the Q&A was about the difficulty in getting into BYU and how kids were getting left out (remember, this was 20 years ago and it was getting difficult). Elder Oaks took the question and started with this:

"Brethren - you need to change the expectation of the youth - teach them to expect to attend institute locally, because the church's mission is not to guarantee a university education"...or something like that."

After hearing that, I am really pleased that they have accommodated almost everyone at BYUI. A church university experience is something I value as a parent, especially for the marriage pool. I think that the church, and the donations received at BYU especially, have really helped provide the funds. What will be interesting is how big will they let BYUI get? At $1,875 per semester, could you raise the fees so that more could attend as growth continues?
