I think he's just saying that just because BYU didn't fall for the propaganda

machine, that doesn't necessarily make them difficult to deal with, or a "jerk". And since SoCalCoug can think for himself instead of following along with the pack, others may see him as difficult, or a "jerk", when in fact he's probably a great guy and a very nice person.
