None of those things mean that independence "has failed".
You admit yourself that Indy is far better than the MWC. Indy was never an end goal for BYU, P5 inclusion has always been and will continue to be the goal. Indy was a way to improve BYU's situation and it clearly has done that.
Independence has not failed. Is it ideal? No, but it has not failed.
