Anything in the temple interview is a commandment that qualifies you
for greater blessings. The Word of Wisdom officially became part of the temple interview in 1902, and it didn't disqualify you for entry into the temple until 1921. So, much like Moses commanding the Isrealites, "Thou shalt not kill" could turn around and tell his people: "Kill all that live and breathe in Canaan," the word of God changes. Just because the section was a policy and then became a commandment doesn't change anything.

That being said, I have no idea if those dudes at the Jazz game were Mormon or not, and I certainly don't care that they're drinking in BYU gear.
