I am not convinced of this...

...that every WCC (or just about every) team has 2-3 big men that can post up and score in the low blocks. I'd say almost no WCC teams have 2-3 bigs (exception being Gonzaga). Most WCC teams have bigs that are stiffs and generally only score in the paint after a guard penetrated and dished to them or they scrap for some points in the paint

The scholly was most likely down to him or Shaw. Hindsight..... but can see where it was a tough choice at the time.
