Penn State could have lost its football program, but not because there was strong evidence of a serious crime being committed by a football coach.

The university president, athletic director, and other officials knew Sandusky was a pedophile and child rapist in 1998. Not only did they cover up their knowledge of his crimes, but they let Sandusky use campus office space to run the "childrens' charity" that he used to identify and groom children. It was the kids he molested after 1999 that got Sandusky sent to prison.

Their punishment isn't for a coach raping children, but for covering up the crime and allowing it to continue.
