I've worked with the teachers when needed, and it's been fan. They like having
a parent who is actually aware of their kid and engaged. When I explain what I think is best for the child, they have been ok with it.

The OP talked about an elementary kid having more homework than a teenager. That is NOT healthy for your child. Your child's health and sanity comes first. As I mentioned, I rarely opt out of homework from a teacher, but if my kid had 5 hours of homework a week in elementary school, you bet I would. My responsibility is to my child, and homework at that level research shows is detrimental to them.
