sports in general (maybe you were referring to just football and basketball). We are definitely in agreement BYU has had to operate by a substantially more stringent set of guidleines. Winning in spite of them brings tremendous satisfaction.
If you'll note from another response made to you, across the board otherwise our programs have been extremely respectable, the Director's Cup standings speak for themselves.
But to your key point it's highly unlikely we can consistently be in the top 5 football or basketball rankings year after year, I tend to agree. That being said, we've captured lightning in a bottle several times over my several decades of rabid Fandom, and it can still happen in the future.
I had to laugh when you said "we will NEVER be like Texas on the gridiron". Well, up until last season we held a 4-1 win margin in that series:

Followed by "or like Duke on the hardwood", well that series is tied at 1-1:
You could have also said going into last season "we will NEVER beat Kansas on their court"....
I know these are limited samples, but my point is valid...our teams can generally compete favorably. Stating that BYU is a mid-level, mid-major...that is Yewt talk, plain and simple.
