But ESPN has ties with all the AQ conferences

And as such, it does not want to anger them. Any of the AQ conferences is more valuable than BYU. By rallying for BYU over an AQ team ESPN would alienate an AQ conference. It's not good business to annoy your more valuable partners to help a less-valuable one.
