In our HS program, if a kid played his Junior year and was actively involved in the program throughout the offseason heading into his Senior year, he didn't even have to tryout. Everyone would participate in tryouts as practice and conditioning, but the coaching staff made it clear who was actually trying out for the team. They would allow kids who planned to tryout to play Spring/Summer league and even attend team camps, but it was always clearly communicated to those who didn't have a spot on the regular season roster.
