They’re trying to be a league full of research institutions and higher learning, while at the same time trying to field competitive football teams in a sport that’s quickly becoming a developmental league for the NFL. It’s going to become more and more difficult to be both as college football demands more time, revenue, and focus than before. Trying to compete with the Ivy League in academics and the SEC in athletics is a difficult proposition. I believe this is a major contributor to why the league has been tending downward for some years now.
