Since they based the geography of their sample on the geographic breakout of the top 500 recruits, there is more representation in those regions (Southeast and L.A.). Since the questions were how likely you are to attend this school, and how likely you would be to recommend the school to someone else, it is not surprising that a major school closer to home would get higher scores. They didn't ask "how strong do you think this brand is?"
Furthermore, being a religious school with our honor code probably means we scored pretty low in the "how likely are you to recommend BYU to someone else?" question. Even if a player would consider subjecting themselves to the honor code, they probably would be less likely to recommend that for someone else.
