Just answer the question please.
You claim that conference affiliation doesn't matter. I say it does. I say that one of the reasons an athlete chooses oregon is because they play in the pac12. It's not the only reason, maybe not even a big reason, but it's a reason. And if an LDS player is choosing between Oregon and BYU, the fact that they are both in a P5 conference would negate one reason for that athlete to choose Oregon.
