The reverse logic doesn't work--because if you lose to the #1 team--you could
lose your conference championship and still be the #2 team in the country (see Alabama vs. LSU).
Being a conference champion doesn't mean anything more than the fact that you're the best team in your region. It's a somewhat arbitrary distinction (based on the quality of your regional foes) and it's less transparent than the BCS.
