more deserving. All you really know, is that team A who won its conference championship is better than perceived power team B who failed to win its conference - as long as you define "better" by who wins the completely fair head-to-head rules for conferences. Why does Team B, as the 2nd best team in its conference, get a chance to go to a 4 team playoff to claim the right to be best in country? Why do they get a second chance when you have other conference champions - although you may perceive them to be weaker - who have not yet been "disproven" to be the best (after all, they were determined to be the best in their conference by fair rules).
Unless everyone plays everyone, you just don't know. That's why you have to have regional (or conference) champs that advance to a national competition, just like every other reasonably run sport.
