First deployment, first flight in Japan after four months of easy flying
Fall of 2006, as a P-3C flight officer. I would get airsick on the plane a lot, especially if I haven't done any low altitude work in a long while, but it usually gets better the more I do it. We just spent the last four months flying high altitude combat reconnaissance missions over Iraq; mostly smooth flights except for the occasional thunderstorm trying to get out to the Gulf, and I hadn't puked on the plane since deployment started. Finally get rotated to our base in Northern Japan, and our first flight there has us doing ship "rigging" for four hours; flying at 200-300 feet off the water to take high quality imagery of any ships in our op area. Our op area has just had a Cat 2 typhoon move through, and the crosswind gusts are still bouncing between 75 and 100 knots, 30 foot seas, the works. Needless to say, the plane is bouncing all over the place, and I've utilized my first gallon sized ziplock bag within the first half hour (usually carry two). Oh, and since I was the navigator/communicator, I was still required to make routine radio calls and keep a tactical record of the flight...while trying not to puke all over my charts and paperwork for the next three and a half hours. Not a happy flight for me.
