Let me guess, you've only really lived in Mexico City?
The fact that you're kids went to that kind of school, and your wife's OBGYN was foreign, means you probably lived in Lomas de Chapultepec, or perhaps Tecamachalco or Polanco. And your wife was going to Hospital ABC, which is a joint British American private hospital that hires a lot of foreign doctors. Yeah, I lived there too during time outside of my mission. I'm guessing you went to the English speaking ward in Estaca Chapultepec? You get a lot of what you described in those areas, but you're talking about a very specific subset of a very specific city. Similar areas exist in Monterrey (San Pedro), and to a smaller extent in Guadalajara. But this is like someone who is already wealthy from Africa going and living in Westchester or Greenwhich or another wealthy multicultural part of New York City, and then going back three years later saying, "I know how Americans are!"

I also had missionary companions who were from Ciudad Neza, Ecatapec, Naucaulpan (the ghetto part, not the nice Lomas Verdes area by Satelite) and the area in the mountains north of the Benemerito/MTC (I think it was called Cuautepec, but I'm not sure), so I spent a lot of time with them in those areas. Completely different world. Completely different attitudes. Much more in line with where I served my mission and with the areas I had to visit growing up due to my grandparents being from two different parts of Mexico.
