important part of what it is to be a Mexican. That was kind of my point -- Chivas' policy is based on nationality, not race or ethnicity. They can sign any Mexican citizen as a player, regardless of whether his grandparents were mestizos, Germans, Maya, Spaniards, Jews, or "turcos" (from the Middle East), or any combination of the above.
Having said this, I agree with you that Mexican culture is quite discriminatory when it comes to race. I'm not sure I would necessarily say more so than the US, but it is at least equally so. Clearly Mexicans of native descent are looked down upon by many, especially if they still embrace native Amerindian culture. And white Mexicans of European descent are at the top of the food chain, just like they are in the US -- just watch their TV programming, or look at their business elite or government leaders. On the other hand, the widespread "meztisaje" (the mixing of the races) has a moderating effect on racism, IMO, as most Mexicans have ancestors from at least two of the main ethnic/racial groups. This heads off some of the more extreme stuff that we have seen in some other countries in which Europeans colonized aboriginal lands.
