"differences" and treat the vast majority accordingly. Yes, I'm another of those RMs from the Leon Mission, but this was my experience in Aguascalientes, San Luis Potosí, and Guanajuato. It has also been my experience in Michoacán with my in laws, as well as California and Arizona. I would suggest looking into The Labyrinth of Solitude by Octavio Paz. Mexican identity does not accept differences very well, and is very hive minded. Chivas is just a public example of what is common practice in daily attitudes of "Mexicans".
My wife has the cactus leaf right there on her forehead, as well as my two step sons, but they are not Mexican enough according to many even within our own family because they were born here.
Mexican culture is way more discriminatory than American culture. Ask the mejica, the sapotecos, the Nahuatl, the maya. Calling someone an Indian is typically one of the lower insults. My own mother offended my wife by being excited that she was a lamanite and an Indian.
I accept that there are very forward and open minded individuals in Mexico who do not make distinctions, but I would encourage some further and more amplia investigación.
