It's only worked for 1 team, and even they have struggled so much with it that they have seen the light and have an agreement with a conference that allows Notre Dame to hitch their wagon to the conference without being an official member. Notre Dame still gets all the big games... and they still struggle with it. And Notre Dame has had decades of pulling this off.

People say that the landscape of college football has changed, and I agree it has... but that doesn't necessarily mean it's good to be Independent either. There has been no sign that this is working for the program on the field or in recruiting. Our pocket book has been steady... but it's always been steady no matter where we have been. So that's a wash. We play for absolutely nothing right now... a game against UMASS brings in 50K fans, if that. A game against Wyoming in November when we were a MWC team, sold out or nearly sold out the stadium then. Why? cause we were playing for something, and opponent didn't matter.

I don't get up on the names of teams we are playing, because we are still on the outside looking in. It matters to me none, because the game means absolutely nothing. If we play Wisconsin and beat them... the news will be about why Wisconsin lost, not why BYU won. Stanford vs USC play each other that same day... that will be the game that will be remembered come November, more than our game vs Wisconsin.
