Those reasons are just as much a guess as anything else

Tanner's performance the past couple of years is a pretty good indicator he hasn't earned a clear starter role yet, especially when the coaches are saying there isn't much separation.

It's possible the coaches are blowing smoke for several reasons. Don't think we'll know for sure the reason they haven't named a starter until a few games into the season.
