it appears this is a great question for a critical thinking class

there has shaken out to be two very different interpretations of the wording of the question, but for a critical thinking class the answer is not really as important as how you get to that answer. so I imagine there would be some great discussion/arguments in an in-person classroom as people try to get others to adopt their interpretation.
