I don't have an issue with such a small amount of money being given, but

I might ask someone in administration if that is how these situations are supposed to be handled? Are teachers paying for damage to the classroom equipment? If they confirmed that this is the case, personally I would not only give the $3 but throw in some extra for the classroom in general because she is having to deal with the trouble.
