The kid made a mistake... but it was a serious mistake, and it needs to be dealt with, in such a way.
A slap on the wrist would be counterproductive, both for Neil- and for the community. The punishment needs to be fair, but severe enough that it deters him from ever making the mistake again.

We cannot tolerate drunk driving. Period. The number of people who die every year, as a result of drunk driving is unacceptable.

At BYU, consuming ANY alcohol is against the Honor Code- and there's a reason for that. The Prophet Joseph Smith revealed the Word of Wisdom in 1833- LONG before medicine and science discovered the harm of alcohol, tobacco, and other substances. I don't believe alcohol should be illegal, but I totally understand why the Lord has counseled us not to use it. It's addictive, and it alters our mental faculties.

Yesterday was my uncle's 59th birthday. It was his third consecutive birthday in custody. Maybe 4 years ago, he got his 4th DUI. Thankfully, he's never injured anyone- but his addiction to alcohol has destroyed his life. He's been miserable as long as I can remember, but instead of ever trying to treat the problem- he's numbed out with alcohol- sometimes even resorting to mouthwash. He WAS an intelligent guy- 35 years ago, but he has consumed SO much alcohol that it has permanently damaged his brain. When he's not in jail, he works at the DI- thanks to his bishop. He's going to be released soon, and I'm willing to wager that it's only a matter of time before he violates his parole- because he can't pass a liquor store- without succumbing to his need to drink.

I'm not in any way suggesting that Neil is addicted- or is an alcoholic. I'm sure that this was just a stupid mistake. I'm just saying that alcohol isn't just harmful when you drive. It can ruin your life. And I know several people who developed an alcohol problem when they were in college.

I'm sure Neil is humiliated. I'm sure that he wishes he could run away, and hide- and I don't blame him. For his best interest, though, I hope he can use this mistake as an opportunity to be humbled, to be refined, and to grow. And I hope he comes back. This doesn't need to define his life.
