IMO, BYU is different, P5 status or non status
is about performance. A top 25 BYU who can consistently go 3-2 or 2-3 against P5s and take care of business against inferior opponents will be perceived as P5.

Who would honestly argue against that?

Independence provides that option.

The G5 associated with BYU now is tied to the ugly losses. Folks can forget those quickly and still remember recent wins over Miss. State, Michigan State and Wisconsin...if BYU gets back to a 9, 10, 11 win seasons.

I think the program is right there.

BYU is expected to have a solid defense most years...the only thing missing from the formula is consistent explosivity with the offense.

I like what I see from Wilson. He has the potential to make that happen. Frankly, BYU is still a top notch destination for QB recruits and will always be. So if the Cougars can lock in stellar QB over the next 3 years and follow that with high level QB talent...winning at a level that engender P5 perception is possible with independence.

And the best thing about QB recruiting, is elite recruits will almost always choose BYU over Utah, BSU and most other schools in the west. So it's sustainable.
