You're way overselling the mythical G5 NY6 access to yourself
When was the last time BYU finished the season as the highest ranked non P5 team?
Any guesses?
It wasn't 2009 when we finished 11-2. Cincinnati finished ranked higher than us that year.
It wasn't 2007 when we finished 11-2 and were ranked #12 - West Virginia (who was then in the Big East finished ranked higher than us)
It wasn't 2001 when we finished the regular season 12-1. Syracuse (then in the Big East) finished the season ranked ahead of us.
You have to go all the way back to one of the top 5 all time teams in BYU history (1996 team) to find a season where we finished ranked as the top non P5 team. In that case we were ranked #5 in the polls to end the year and in today's NY6 structure, we would likely would have been given a NY6 slot anyway.
Historically the NY6 slot to the highest rated G5 team might be relevant to BYU once every 20 or 30 years. The odds are, however, that BYU would make a NY6 bowl that often anyway without the autobid.
