BYU supports it's own sports programs. BYUI(Ricks) did not. That is the issue.
BYUI community and students didn't care enough about them to show up and support them, so why should the church subsidize weak programs like that? With better support from the community and students, those programs still exist. So the people who should care about them didn't, and that is why they left.
