The hospital may be in network but many providers are not. This is a well known practice where the hospital contracts out physician groups not on your insurance and no one is going to notify you they aren't. I don't think many doctors would ever know. I rarely ever check my patients insurance status. The New England Journal of Medicine has published a few papers on this topic and a quick Google search will bring up many results.
