This is not unusual unfortunately.

Kaiser Health News has been running a continual national series on this type of thing ("surprise medical bills"). Check out their website. I think they may have some tips on how to combat this which I believe usually entails calling the provider whose bill you're disputing and trying to negotiate a lower price.

Yeah it sucks but sometimes the facility is in network, but the doctor on call is not.

That’s a garbage practice. If I go to U of U healthcare for service, they should bill me. The hospital should negotiate
