That precedent was set by Bronco. His bar used to be 10+ wins, top 25 finish and a bowl win. Then when he realized he..
...couldn’t keep up that pace using his own recruits he attempted to lower the bar by saying it was hard just to win 8 games playing mediocre schedules. he did great using another coach’s recruits but when he had to depend on his own recruiting efforts he couldn’t maintain the standard.

Times change and it’s getting tougher to compete in college football. Does anyone really think that Lavell could duplicate his accomplishments from 40-ish years ago today in this day and age of college football? Bronco couldn’t do it from one decade to the next and he didn’t have Pac12 title contender Utah to deal with (he had mediocre, middle of the Pac12 Utah).

A lot of factors go into the changing of a bar. Using your simplistic approach to comparing coaches, Bronco is a failed coach when Lavell set the bar at National Championships, national awards like Heisman, Outland, Davey O’Briens, Baugh, Maxwell etc, NFL draft picks, All-American awards, etc and Bronco couldn’t do any of that.
