Here’s a quote from Bronco in 2014 where he lowers his bar from 10+ wins, top 25 finish and a bowl win down to...
...just winning 8 games and being one of 80 teams invited to a bowl. In essence he’s saying we just need to finish somewhere in the top 75-80 to be successful.
"I am already calling this season a success," he said. "I kind of categorize that it has been a good season, or is a good season. It is hard to win eight games, and it is hard to go to a bowl game. It is hard to consistently keep the program performing at a high level." Bronco
He went on to lose the bowl game against a team being coached by an interim head coach (their QB Coach). His mindset in the above quote explains why we seemed so poorly prepared in that game and lost and why we finished his time at byu on a 3 game bowl losing streak. He’d thrown in the towel and was accepting mediocrity.
