I was ready to move on to a new coach after the Toledo and USF losses. The two wins over Boise and USU have helped the sting of those two bad losses a little bit. I'm not 100% behind giving him an extension though.
I'm trying to be objective. Looking back over the season, our offense changed when we lost Ty'son Williams. I think the coaches went into the season thinking we'd spend the year leaning on his legs. When he got injured, they had to figure out a new plan, and it took Grimes a while to figure out what section of the playbook worked with the team without Williams. If I'm honest/objective, we probably don't lose those two games if Ty'son is healthy.
The turnaround this year happened when we started giving Finau more carries vs. Boise. Our struggles happened when we were relying on Esukpa as our primary RB. Looking back, I guess I could reasonably argue that our mid-season struggles were due to losing our #1 RB and taking some time to find a new #1 ball carrier. Put another way, maybe I shouldn't lay everything on the feet of the coaches.
At the same time, our defense has been bad to mediocre all year, even when we were 100% healthy in the first few games. That's a coaching shortfall.
