Now we have that answer. On Wednesday afternoon, Tesla announced that it made a profit of $143 million during the third quarter of 2019. The other headline figures from Q3 2019 are that, at the end of September, the company had $5.3 billion in cash and cash equivalents and $371 million in operating cash.
If Tesla is now profitable after cranking out Model 3s, wait to see how profitable they will be with the Model Y, which could sell 3 to 1 when compared to the Model 3. Tesla worked out all the kinks on the model 3 and will sell a massive number of model Ys which share 75% of it's components with the model 3. The Model Y is ahead of schedule which is a first for Tesla.
