but this is evening out due to how much time and reps Zach has missed and...
...likely will miss due to his style of play. Beck missed very little time or reps due to injury during his 4 yrs at BYU. He missed one game his last 3 yrs due to injury and was able to put in dedicated time every off-season. His progress was noticeable each season over the previous season. In Zach's case missing an entire off season plus weeks of practice during the season can be a major setback in his development. This is time/opportunity lost that I don't think you can get back. Meanwhile the players on the depth chart behind him have closed that gap and are building on their momentum.

Think about it, for sake of argument lets say it takes 10,000 hrs of reps to master something (obviously it could be less time required for a gifted or high IQ person and more for a slow learner but we'll avg it for the sake of this discussion) . If Player A stays on track and doesn't miss any time due to injury, etc then maybe on avg he reaches his level of automaticity in his junior year (that's the level of proficiency where a player is no longer thinking through things and 90% of his cerebral cortex is freed up for processing in live action more quickly. In other words, position mastery).

If Player A misses out on a quarter of that time due to injury then he doesn't reach his level of automaticity until a year later (his senior year instead of his junior year). If he continues to miss time in multiple years then he might never reach his level of automaticity during his college career.

Meanwhile, Players B and C have all been putting in their hours and are progressing on schedule without much interruption. They are now potentially caught up in development with Player A or even surpass him. If Player A misses too much time due to incurring more injuries from a cavalier style of play then potentially it becomes a detriment to the team to hold back Players B and C who have potentially put in more hours and have now moved closer to automaticity or position mastery than Player A.

Obviously the amount of time required to reach position mastery varies by the individual but it's entirely possible that Jaren Hall and Baylor Romney have closed that gap between them and Zach (due to Zach missing the entire off-season plus several weeks during the season). I think coaches need to consider that Zach's style of play is going to lead to more injuries and missing of significant time and reps and that this will be a risk to the continuity and productivity of the offense if they stick with him as QB1 and he doesn't modify his style of play.
