The way things currently are, a national championship is not attainable for 95% of college football teams and major bowls are not attainable for the majority either. Not sure what you mean by 'little to play for'. If you don't play for the enjoyment of playing, for the competition, for the pride of representing yourself, your family and your school, you're playing for the wrong thing IMO. I just enjoy watching BYU play and love it when they play well and have success. I'm not pining for a major bowl or national championship. We got one. Most schools won't EVER have that.
