If you are only looking at test scores/grades, then homeschooling might be a
really good route (assuming you have super invested parents). And while I reject many homeschooling stereotypes (see my post below), if you want your kids to grow up being well-rounded academically AND prepared to navigate a very diverse society, there are a lot of advantages to putting you kids in public or even private school.

It's ok for middle school and high school kids to have classes that they feel are useless, or teachers who aren't shy about sharing personal viewpoints that are very different from what they have learned at home. I'd much prefer my kids be exposed to things while they are at home so we can help them frame the narrative around controversial topics than for them to come across them when they might not have those with their best interest in positions of significant influence. My oldest is a senior in HS. She did very well in school, was involved in a number of activities and leadership opportunities, is really well rounded and adjusted and we have no concerns about how she will far in college next year. Though she will attend BYU, she would be just as adept at navigating any other campus regardless of it's political, religious, or social leanings.

To us, that's a reflection of what we hope to see in our kids as they prepare to leave home. They haven't been sheltered. They haven't had things tailored to what suits their strengths academically. They aren't oblivious to the huge spectrum of differing political and religious and social and ethical beliefs, but can recognize the good that is in each of them while also recognizing the "whaaa" that they have as well.

Homeschool kids can absolutely be academic allstars. And I disagree with the label that they are awkward. However, they do tend to grow up in more of a bubble - which may be good or bad, really up to each parent to decide. We want our kids to be aware of other beliefs and ideas and views; to recognize that Muslims or liberals or atheists or illegal immigrants or even real weirdos like conservative Utah Mormons are largely good people despite their differences.
